POSITION SUMMARY:

The Music Teacher is expected to develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instrumental music expression; to help students discover and develop talents in the field of music; to help students develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music and in *instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and/or choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to students. Utilizes standards established by the State's Department of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction is accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Supports the educational and behavioral goals of all students, including those with an Individualized Education Plan or those learning English as a second language.
  • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments equipment as required.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
  • Evaluates each student’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Maintains open and ongoing communication with parents on their child’s progress.
  • Collaborates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Utilizes research-based best practices in daily planning and classroom instruction.
  • Integrates culturally responsive teaching practices into daily lessons and interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Desires a growth-focused coaching environment based on frequent observations, debriefs, action planning, and progress monitoring.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively and respectfully with all colleagues.
  • Incorporates 21st century technology skills into instruction.
  • Contributes to a positive climate and culture by exhibiting high professional standards.
  • Understands, accepts, abides by, and implements the school’s philosophy and mission statement in all school activities.
  • Cooperates with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, as applicable.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school.
  • Performs other duties as many, from time to time be assigned by the school administrator.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant teaching area is required
  • Current State certification/licensure in appropriate teaching area
  • Knowledge of State Standards and Common Core Standards
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Successful completion of federal and state criminal background checks
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and effectively prioritize and execute tasks to meet deadlines consistently
  • Ability to use discretion in managing confidential information
  • High quality written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in an urban and/or school turnaround setting is a plus
